The Garage That Costs You a Bumper

A parking structure concentrates tight turns, poor sight lines, blind ramps and immovable concrete into a very small space. Nearly all of the resulting damage is low-speed and self-inflicted, which is genuinely the good news: it means nearly all of it is avoidable, and it happens in the order you meet the hazards.

The clearance bar

The height bar at the entrance is the first hazard and the most expensive one to get wrong. It matters if you have a roof box, bikes or boards on the roof, a lifted truck, a roof-mounted antenna, or simply a taller vehicle than usual — a rental van, a work truck, a borrowed SUV.

Know your height as the vehicle is loaded today, not as it left the factory. If you are close, do not chance it. The bar is deliberately set below the lowest thing inside, so clipping a duct, a sprinkler line or a sign means property damage on top of a damaged roof, and sprinkler pipes in particular do not fail quietly. In our experience the classic version of this is a roof box the driver stopped noticing three days into a trip.

Ramps

Blind, steep, frequently single lane in each direction, with a convex mirror at the top that nobody looks at. Two rules cover most of it: keep right and stay off the center line, and use a short tap of the horn before a blind ramp turn in a busy structure. Steep ramps also scrape low front bumpers at the transition where the slope changes — approach those at a slight angle if the geometry allows, so one corner leads.

Columns and the spaces beside them

The space next to a column is the one everybody leaves until last, for good reason: the column blocks a door on one side, and it sits at exactly the height of a door edge and a bumper corner. If you take one, spend the extra ten seconds positioning centrally. Most column damage happens because the driver was already crowded against the vehicle on the other side and had run out of room before they started.

Sight lines when you leave

Between two tall vehicles you can see essentially nothing until your bumper is already in the lane. Reverse out slowly and in increments, checking both directions repeatedly, and remember that the camera is showing you what is behind rather than what is arriving from the side. Better still, back into the space when you arrive so you can drive out forward.

People on foot

People walk in the traffic lanes of a garage because there is nowhere else to walk, often between rows, often on a phone, often carrying enough that they cannot see over it. Structures are also where people push carts, load trunks with the tailgate up, and step backward without looking. Assume anyone near a row of cars is about to move into your path, and drive at a speed where that assumption costs you nothing.

If something does happen

If you damage another vehicle, leave a proper note — your name, address and what happened — and photograph it in place. Vehicle Code section 20002 is the section that requires a driver who damages an unattended vehicle to stop and identify themselves rather than drive off, and the practical reality in a modern structure is that there is almost certainly a camera covering the aisle you were in. If you damage the structure itself, a barrier, a post or a pipe, report it to the operator. Leaving is not a smaller problem because the damage was to a building.
